Manchester United kicked off their 2023/24 Premier League campaign with a hard-fought 1-0 victory over Wolves at Old Trafford. Despite the expected result, the manner in which they achieved it raised some eyebrows.
Raphael Varane proved to be the match-winner, heading home a corner in the 55th minute to give Erik ten Hag's side all three points. The goal, however, was the only bright spark in an otherwise lackluster performance from the Red Devils.
Wolves, under the stewardship of caretaker manager Gary O'Neil, gave United a run for their money. They defended resolutely and caused the hosts plenty of problems on the break. In the end, though, they were unable to find an equalizer and succumbed to their first defeat of the season.
Ten Hag, who is aiming to restore Manchester United to their former glory, will be pleased with the result but will know that his team has a long way to go. They were often disjointed in possession and lacked creativity in the final third. They also rode their luck at times, with Wolves hitting the woodwork on a couple of occasions.
Nevertheless, United's victory is a positive start to the new season. They will now look to build on this momentum when they travel to Southampton on Saturday.
